When I was pregnant with babyjama, I heard about wool diaper covers (also called soakers). They are supposed to be this miraculous thing that our great grandmothers used. Apparently they are waterproof, leak proof and have anti-bacterial properties. I have to say that I wasn't sold until I saw how cute they are (the fat little baby at the bottom of the page is my favorite). Anyway, so I decided that I wanted to try them out...but, they're REALLY expensive (between 25 and 50 bucks depending on what you buy). Anyway, frugal mama that I am I was not about to pay that much for something that my baby is going to poop on.
That's when I found the world of knitting (and crocheting and sewing) wool soakers. The first thing I found was this, which resulted in these two little soakers made from an old shrunken sweater.

They took about 1.5 hours each to make with my sewing machine (including cutting and pinning). But now I'm on to new challenges. I'm actually knitting a soaker that will have legs (like the one she's wearing in the photo). Here's the link to the pattern I'm using. I bought it on e-bay. Here's what I have so far.

I'm knitting it in the round and so the waistband is at the bottom there, and I'm working on the body now. Anyway, I'll leave you with one other recently finished project 20 years in the making. My Mom started these slippers for me when I was little and never got around to finishing them. She knitted the tops, but never got the chance to sew the soles on. So last week I told myself I was going to finish them before I started knitting babyjama's soaker. So here they are finished after 20 years. What are you working on?
